Local Institutes (LIs) work hard to deliver what the local Insurance communities want. A thriving Institute doesn’t just happen though; there is a lot of hard work that goes on behind the scenes to deliver the various events and support that is offered.

A few LIs have specific administration support in an office where the membership numbers merit it but, on the whole, the developing, organising and running of educational events, sports and social activities and the Chartered Insurance Institute and Pensions Management examinations is carried out through a dedicated group of volunteers from within our profession.

Each institute has a President who is elected annually and usually following a year of being Deputy President. Along with these two roles there are many others which form a full Council to run the LI through the set up of various committees.

 Here in Birmingham, for example, we have the following committees;
Administration and Finance:  (Comprising Vice Presidents active in the insurance market, President, Secretary and Treasurer) This committee looks after the financial well being of the LI.
Education and Examinations:  Responsible for educational seminars, workshops and meetings, the local examination centre, student recognition, tuition, careers etc.
Programme:  Planning, organising and running lunchtime lectures, the LI’s Annual Dinner, Charity fundraising e.g. BII luncheon.
Young Members:  (Comprising under 35’s) Arranging and running a range of sports and social events for all LI members, raising money for charity throughout the year.
Main Council is made up of The President, Deputy President, Secretary and Treasurer, past presidents called Vice Presidents, the Chair of Young Members and the members of all other sub-committees above.

The LIs of  Birmingham, Coventry, Stratford-upon-Avon, Shropshire and Mid-Wales and Stoke-on-Trent fall into the CII’s West Midlands Region.  We all work together, meeting several times a year to ensure that we work collaboratively to deliver programmes that our collective members will engage with and value as part of their CII Membership.

 If you or your organisation would like to be more involved or perhaps you wish to become a committee member for your LI we would be delighted to welcome you. Don’t delay do contact us or look on our respective websites to find out more.
